Open and close a cash drawer

Open with a float, count at the end, and post the difference honestly.

Opening

Cash → Open drawer. Enter the float — the money already in it before trading starts.

During the day

Cash sales land in it on their own. Cash in and Cash out record anything else: a supplier paid from the till, money taken to the bank.

Closing

Count what is actually there, by denomination. The page shows Expected against Counted and the Difference.

The difference is posted to the ledger as Cash Short/Over rather than being adjusted away. A drawer that always balances exactly is a drawer nobody is counting, and the number only becomes useful once it is allowed to be non-zero.

Seeing a week or a month of it

The Cash screen shows the drawer that is open right now and the last few closes. For a period, press Cash received report at the top of it, or open Reports → Cash Received (Drawer).

It has a row per shift — float, cash sales, cash in, cash out, expected, counted, over/short — and totals underneath. Today, This week, This month and a custom range are along the top, and Every movement switches from one row per shift to one row per movement, with the invoice number or the reason next to it. Exports and emails like every other report.

A shift counts on the day it was opened, so a drawer that closes after midnight still lands on the day it traded.

Why this is the report to keep

Cash is the money with no bank feed behind it. Everything else arrives in the books on its own; this is the only figure that exists because somebody counted it, which is exactly why it is worth reading weekly.
